The Workshop on Teaching Critical Thinking Skills in Science with sInvestigator took place on Saturday, June 3rd, 2017, in Room L102 Active Learning Technology, Exploratory Hall, George Mason University, Fairfax Campus.
During the first year of this three-year project, we piloted sInvestigator with Dr. James Trefil in his undergraduate Modern Scientific Revolutions course. Our research focused on the evaluation of web-based scientific evidence. Lecture topics were integrated with collaborative work using sInvestigator to search, examine, and assess the credibility and relevance of the found evidence to scientific arguments.
The objective of the workshop is to present and disseminate the results of this research to support inquiry-based scientific reasoning in K-16 classrooms. We will demonstrate the use of sInvestigator and report on the pilot study findings. The attendees will engage then with sInvestigator in collaborative groups, having the opportunity to explore its potential applications in their teaching contexts. The attendees will receive the working version of the sInvestigator software, together with associated teaching materials.
